What we do

New Horizons in British Islam

We are a forward-thinking organisation that engages in critical discussions around identity, tradition and reform, to provide a positive, contextual vision of what it means to be a Muslim in Britain today.

New Horizons in British Islam is inspired by Islamic values and spirituality. We speak from within the Muslim tradition, but for the benefit of all people, whatever their beliefs or background.

Our vision is of a society where Muslims and fellow citizens have strong reciprocal relationships, embracing our shared values and the rich diversity of our country.

We want to challenge narrow and closed attitudes and counter prejudice wherever it is found, celebrating the value of open, democratic and mixed societies.

Our work brings together a diversity of voices to enhance our understanding of what Islam means in our modern lives, as we live our Islamic faith and traditions in a British way.

What we do

At New Horizons in British Islam, we speak from within the Muslim tradition, but for the benefit of all people, whatever our beliefs or background.

We campaign to raise awareness about important causes, and work to fight prejudice wherever we find it, and in all its forms.

Campaigns

New Horizons in British Islam has led and joined several campaigns that reflect our values on issues which can damage community relations and how Muslims are understood. Our recent campaigns have included issues such as #MeToo, Black Lives Matter, Antisemitism, respect and dignity for LGBT+ individuals, organ donation and more.

Bridge-building retreats

We arrange meetings between people of different faiths and backgrounds to build understanding and encourage discussion about some of the divisive themes in our society. As trust develops and relationships are formed, sensitive topics and fault lines can be spoken about openly in a safe space. Groups so far have included Shia and Sunni, Imams and lay people, Jews and Muslims, and Sikhs and Muslims.

Ramadan Bites

During this spiritual month, we invite a diverse range of voices, many from other religions and beliefs, to share their personal reflection about Ramadan, spirituality and life in general. We see this as a fresh approach to thinking about Ramadan and how many more people can connect with it.

Learning about Islam

We provide resources to support anyone wanting to learn more about Islam. Our research has shown that the absence of clear, reliable and relevant information creates difficulties and challenges for people as they navigate their way around the basic themes of Islamic knowledge and practice. We have designed practical resources which are updated regularly.

They help to explain the daily lived experiences of Islam. We also have a selection of religious resources of a spiritual and theological nature for anyone wanting to take their research further.
